Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has formally sought a presidential pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump while continuing to fight his criminal conviction and 25-year prison sentence. The move marks another dramatic chapter in one of the largest financial fraud scandals in modern American history and highlights the increasingly complex relationship between cryptocurrency, politics, and the U.S. justice system.
Bankman-Fried, commonly known as SBF, was once regarded as one of the brightest stars in the cryptocurrency industry. At the peak of his success, he was worth billions of dollars and was celebrated as an innovative entrepreneur who promised to revolutionize digital finance. Through FTX, he built one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, attracting millions of customers and securing investments from major financial institutions and celebrities. However, his empire collapsed spectacularly in November 2022 after revelations that billions of dollars in customer funds had been misused.
In 2023, a federal jury found Bankman-Fried guilty on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors argued that he orchestrated a massive scheme that diverted customer funds from FTX to support risky investments and trading activities at Alameda Research, his affiliated hedge fund. According to court findings, approximately $8 billion in customer money was improperly used to cover losses, make political donations, purchase luxury real estate, and finance private investments. In March 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit billions of dollars.
Despite his conviction, Bankman-Fried has consistently maintained that he did not intend to steal from customers. He has argued that he made serious management mistakes and misjudgments but insists that his actions were not criminal fraud. His legal team has repeatedly claimed that evidence supporting his defense was restricted during the trial and that important testimony was not adequately considered. After losing his appeal to overturn his conviction and sentence, Bankman-Fried has turned to another option: seeking executive clemency from President Trump.
Federal records show that Bankman-Fried has formally submitted a clemency petition to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney. The request remains under review. Reports indicate that the former crypto executive began considering a pardon after Trump’s return to the White House and has since attempted to align himself politically with the administration. In public statements and social media posts, he has praised some of Trump’s economic and cryptocurrency policies and has criticized the previous administration’s approach to regulation and prosecution.
The pardon request is particularly notable because Bankman-Fried was previously one of the Democratic Party’s largest political donors. During the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, he contributed millions of dollars to Democratic candidates and causes. Critics have described his efforts to seek clemency from Trump as a significant political reversal and an indication of how dramatically his circumstances have changed since the collapse of FTX.
President Trump has publicly stated that he currently has no plans to pardon Bankman-Fried. Nevertheless, the possibility of clemency has attracted attention because Trump has previously granted pardons to several figures in the cryptocurrency industry, including former executives associated with major crypto companies. These actions have fueled speculation that Bankman-Fried may still hope to receive favorable consideration despite widespread criticism of his conduct.
The FTX collapse remains one of the most damaging events in the history of the cryptocurrency industry. Millions of customers and investors suffered significant losses, and the scandal triggered increased regulatory scrutiny of digital assets around the world. Many industry leaders have argued that the case damaged public confidence in cryptocurrencies and reinforced concerns about transparency and governance within the sector.
Currently imprisoned in a low-security federal facility in California, Bankman-Fried remains eligible to pursue additional legal appeals, including potential appeals to higher courts. At the same time, his clemency request ensures that his case will continue to attract political and media attention. Whether President Trump ultimately considers the request remains uncertain, but the pardon bid represents another extraordinary twist in the story of a man who went from being one of the world’s richest crypto entrepreneurs to becoming one of the most notorious figures in financial crime history
